COFFEE WINS $ 1,500 ON DUAL LANE PATTERN Dale Coffee, former Cleveland Storm bowling stand-out made the trip from Colorado worthwhile, winning $ 1,500 for beating early leader, Pete Sheridan by twenty pins in the championship match at Tenpins & More on Sunday. The scores of 213 to 193 did not reflect the high scoring pace each had set in the games leading up to the final. Sheridan averaged over 237, while Coffee carded 222 over eight games. Forty-nine entrants were whittled down to twenty then four for the grand final. Los Alamos’ Michael DeVore (who drives down every week for league play at the Rio Rancho Center) opened with a win 245-211 over local Dennis Helmick, who finished fourth. DeVore shot 238 next but lost to Sheridan by ten pins (248) leading into the last match. Other area bowlers who cashed included Justin Medina 6th, Zach Harvey 7th, Trent Irwin 8th and Jake Gill 10th, along with Gabe Maestas 5th from Colorado Springs and Joseph Paterson 9th from Socorro. BOWLING UPDATE From Tenpins & More Rio Rancho’s Aileen Linares and Robin Prioleau won the 86th City Championship Doubles titles at the tournament held last month at Starlight Bowling, Bar & Grill in Bernalillo. Linares contributed 202, 268, 267 (737) while Prioleau added 248, 203, 227 (678) for a handicap-added total of 1,463, to beat Eric Carriaga and Tajameia York by five pins with Pete Sheridan and Carl Chavez third with 1,423. The two women topped a field of one hundred and forty six other duos in the well-attended tournament held over three weekends. The Junior Bowlers Tour double-header weekend was a record-breaker in three ways. Firstly, a record one hundred teams contested the Saturday doubles segment, then a record 87 bowled the singles event Sunday. As well, for the first time in over 25 years, two bowlers, Braden Wearly and Kaden Fleming each won $ 1,000 scholarships for knocking down 32 pins in the Powerbowl, when each bowled strike, seven pins then five pins to the thrill of a large crowd. In the doubles, Garrett Fetty and Diego Lujan of Colorado beat top seeds, Nicco Baccocini and Jacob Gill 214-201 in the scratch final while Lauren Jaramillo and Xavier Provencher shot 256-195 over runners-up, Gianna Panetta and Naomi Kannady. Jaxon Witt of Lubbock, who won the Youth New Mexico Open at Tenpins & More last September put together 267 and 245 to blitz his opponents Camden Coleman 194 then Rowdy Twarogowski 185 for the scratch win. Layne Warner from Northern New Mexico overwhelmed Justin Wolf with a 253 game to capture his first JBT title. A rare dual 300 game sighting occurred in Friday’s session of the “Rancho Runners” League when both Joe LaRosa and Anthony Subia fired perfect games of 300, consisting of twelve consecutive strikes Center manager, Steve Mackie said there had only been two other times in his 26 years at the Center when there were two 300’s bowled on the same night in the same bowling league. BOWLING UPDATE From Tenpins & More Two-hundred-eight games bowled and there is a tie for first place in the annual Valentine’s Doubles tournament at Tenpins & More in Rio Rancho. Teri and Joseph Paterson of Soccoro closed with a team game of 490 and Mike Lee/Joseph LaPointe fired 489 to end up tied for the win at 1,888, twenty pins ahead of Rio Ranchoans, Laurie and Steve Shultz who had held the lead the prior two days on 1.868. Other place-getters included Tom Garcia/Joe Romero with 1,863, followed by Adrian Brown/Jeremiah Martin 1,862 then Jeanne Hietpas-Carver and Andrew Carver 1,851 and Trent Irwin/LaPointe 1.850 in one of the most closely held events in months. A sell-out field with a lengthy wait list is on tap in this weekend’s annual Junior Bowlers Tour “double-header” at Tenpins & More. The doubles event Saturday (February 22) has more than 160 sign-ups while the youth singles on Sunday is likely to also be over-subscribed. The following Sunday (March 2) a first prize of $ 1,500 is attracting bowlers from West Texas, Arizona and Colorado as well as all over New Mexico but it’s not just the strong check. The event is being bowled with dual lane oiling patterns on each pair of lanes, presenting quite a challenge in both physical and mental game preparation. One lane will feature “short oil” and the other “long oil” requiring the use of different bowling balls on the pair. Adding to the affair is that bowlers change lanes each game for five games, before the field is cut in half or more for further cuts before the championship round.

It was their consistent scoring that won them the event, with game winning scores ranging from 401 and 359.

BOWLING UPDATE From Tenpins & More Consistent bowling by both, along with an average match win by 35 pins, gave Monica Redman and Ward Stoffer their first win in the Doubles Marathon Series at Tenpins & More in Rio Rancho on the weekend. The pair went 7-1 in match-play to win outright from twenty-three other combinations, with Redman averaging 180.5 and Stoffer 1917, both slightly above their entering averages. It was their consistent scoring that won them the event, with game winning scores ranging from 401 and 359. Three teams, tied at 6-2 played off for second through fourth place with Robin Prioleau and Jon Arevalo taking the higher spot with 226 and 258 respectively. Third went to Trent Irwin and Joseph LaPointe, followed by Cameron and Haskell Lee. Prioleau, the Albuquerque area “Woman Bowler-of-the-Year”, was on her game at a record pace opening with 278, 280, 247 (805) then adding 236, 252, 265 (753) for a personal best 1,558/6. Arevalo, found form his last six games, averaging 239.5 after a slow – for him – start. Rounding out the top eight were the teams of Will Hall/Joseph Paterson 5th, Land and Josh Matthies 6th, Kimble Platz/Steve Quintana 7th and Brian Bledsoe/Jeremiah Martin 8th. This weekend, more than one hundred and sixty bowlers from as far away as Arizona, Colorado and Texas as well as all over New Mexico will descend on Tenpins & More for the annual Junior Bowlers Tour “double-header” weekend. Action starts at 9am Saturday with the doubles event, then concludes Sunday with the singles tournament. The following Sunday (March 2) the NM Central Tournament Series makes it’s first stop at Rio Rancho in the “Dual Pattern Challenge”. In this unique event, the left lane and right lane of each pair of lanes has a completely different oil pattern laid down, requiring increased concentration and careful ball selection to be able to score well. The winner will receive $ 1,500, largest singles prize offered outside of the New Mexico Open tournament.

BOWLING UPDATE From Tenpins & More Four bowlers have won their divisions in the 25th annual “Champion of Champions” tournament held this month at Tenpins & More in Rio Rancho. Ken Friedrich of Espanola (who drives down at least twice a week to bowl in Rio Rancho) captured the men’s final by almost a 200-pin margin from Lucius Sandoval of Albuquerque and Trent Irwin of Rio Rancho in third place. Friedrich led from start-to-finish in the 143-game event, after opening strongly with 255, 267 and 279 for a rare 801 series. His low game was 202 as he went 11-3 in match-play. Sandoval finished well with nine wins from his last eleven games as did Irwin winning six of seven to push newcomer, Scott McDonnell and Seth Muller into minor placings by virtue of those win bonus pins. Local bowler, Linda Herrera, competing in her record twenty-fifth tournament closed with clean games of 209 and 213 when only 22 pins ahead of fourth place at that point in a tightly-bunched women’s field. She beat Johanna Friedrich by 114 pins in final standings followed by Becky Fisher of Rio Rancho third 25 pins back. Lane Grado, who learned to bowl in Southern California’s bowling hotbed in the 1960’s and 1970’s held a commanding 86-pin lead going into the senior’s final match and all but threw it away with a nerve-wracking 151 game, this after averaging 221 the previous five matches. He won by twelve pins from Friedrich with Dan Brenning, Pete Sheridan and Terry Schmidt finishing three through five. A somewhat different story in the youth final when late starter, Sebastian Medina of Rio Rancho secured a run when an Albuquerque bowler has to withdraw. He took full advantage of the unusual opportunity to go 7-1 and win the title over nine-year-old “prodigy”, Genesis Bajonero of Rio Rancho and third-placed Liam Martinez. * Jacob Gill has become the first bowler to successfully defend his “King of the Hill” title in action at Tenpins & More on Sunday. Barely surviving in round two of the eliminator format (with a 184 game), Gill added 210 and 207 before facing left-hander, Haskell Lee for the championship. It was close throughout the ten-frame match, only one pin the difference in the eighth frame however a solid two strikes in a row by Gill and a difficult spare conversion in the tenth gave him the win, and $400, 193-175. * Four area league members won their respective age divisions in the Northern New Mexico Senior Olympics bowling tournament at Strike Gold Lanes this month. BOWLING UPDATE From Tenpins & More * Nine divisional winners from various age brackets were determined in last weekend’s well-attended Pepsi State Youth Bowling Championship tournament held at Tenpins & More. Local winners included Lucia Griego (Under 12 Girls), Kira Vanderlip (Under 15 Girls), Mia Medina (Under 18 Girls) and Aiden Ruiz-Jimenez (Under 18 Boys). Other winners came in from Alamogordo, Las Cruces, Melrose, Sandia Park and Albuquerque. Ruiz-Jimenez’ six-game total of 1,350 (average 225) was the highest set bowled showing the value of him chasing almost-weekly youth tournaments throughout the region including in Texas, Colorado, Arizona and Nevada. In other events held recently at the Rio Rancho pin plant, seven shared in almost $ 2,000 prize-money at the 9-pin No-Tap led by Espanola’s Kenneth Friedrich’s 1,620 winning total in the Open final. Shane Muller captured Men’s A by 14 over Ron Michel, while senior bowlers, Tony Sanchez won Men’s B and John Waldschmidt took Men’s C. Kassi Romero beat recent Coloradan “transplant” Trinity Williams in the Women’s A final – by ten pins – with veteran Gloria Gonzakowski returning to form in Women’s B, while Arthana Hampel secured the Women’s C win over Socorro’s Riza Paterson. * This month forty bowlers, in separate sections for men, women, seniors and youth, will bowl the match-play finals of the annual “Champion of Champions” tournament. Prize-money of more than $ 4,300 is the reward for the top finishers in each category. * New short-season winter leagues are ramping up to start at Tenpins & More. This Monday (Jan 13) the youth/adult doubles (Family Affair) kicks off at 6.30pm, followed by the Senior Trios on Monday (Jan 20) at 4pm. Then both Saturday morning leagues reform on January 25, youth at 9.20am followed by adults at 11am. Entry is open to everyone with – or without – prior bowling experience. Thornhill, Manning, Paterson, and Hall Dominate Tenpins & More Bowling Marathons

BOWLING UPDATEFrom Tenpins & More * Two Marathons, held a few days apart at Tenpins & More, attracted fifty-one teams of two bowling for a potential share of more than $ 4,100 in prize-money. And the winners of each event won outright, negating the need for a tie-breaker extra game at the end of over five and a half hours of bowling. Tom Thornhill and Khesean Manning went 7-1 in match-play with each sharing the work-load in the first tournament. Thornhill opened with 290, 222 while Khesean closed with 268, 276 and 230. Six duos rolled off for minor placings led by Teresa Hope and Jacob Neal with 391 for second ahead of father-and-son, Gary Kellman/Lucius Sandoval 371, then Daiel Valverde and Johnna Mora fourth with 364. Highest average belonged to Dale Coffee – former anchor-man for Cleveland Storm bowling squad – who drove in from Colorado Springs. Coffee carded 219.6 with a best score of 269. In the second one, Joseph Paterson and Will Hall of Soccoro went through undefeated (8-0) with Paterson firing a personal best 237.5 average made up of 199, 233, 266, 214, 279, 238, 236 and 235. A record 14 teams made the play-offs trying for seven spots of prize-money. Finishing second on 7-1 were Mitchell Schatz and Jeff Chaveau with 397 then Brian Bledsoe and Bob Eberle 358. Four teams, tied at 6-2 were next then eight on 5-3 went for the final paid position in eighth. Following Paterson’s record output was Robin Prioleau. After opening modestly with 201, 202 and 190, the former area woman “bowler of the year” went on a strike-filled tear with games of 249, 268, 258, 276 and 229 for a tournament average of 234.1. * The 25th annual “Champion of Champions” tournament starts qualifying rounds this Saturday (December 14) with thirteen squads running through Sunday December 29. This to determine the 40 bowlers who will contest the finals during January in separate divisions for men, women, seniors and youth. Prize-money is guaranteed at least $ 4,000. Since 2022 however over $ 10,500 has been paid out.
